What is full-fibre broadband?

Our ultrafast, full-fibre network is connecting rural and semi-rural communities with gigabit capable broadband.

Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP), also known as Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH), is an internet technology that delivers high-speed broadband access directly to your home or premises using fibre optic cables.

Getting our fibre to your community

Fibre networks start with a fibre optic ‘backbone’ that typically runs along major roads. The high-capacity fibre cables form the foundation of the network and connect to our data centres.

From the data centre we take new fibre cables to our cabinets (the green boxes on your street).

We usually use underground routes for these cables, but sometimes if there are telegraph poles we’ll use those.

From the green cabinets we take a fibre cable close to the building and we stop there until we’re ready to connect homes, businesses and other buildings who would like to get connected.

All of this work has received all local authority and highway teams permissions.


Connecting you to our network

When you place your order, the installation gets booked where we take a dedicated fibre cable to your home. Usually, we do this via a cable which is buried underground, or if there are telegraph poles in place we may use those.

On the outside of your property we place a small white connection box. From there, we drill a very small hole and bring the fibre cable into the home.

On the inside of the building, we install another small white box called the Optical Network Terminal (ONT). The ONT converts the optical signals from the fibre into electrical signals that can be used by your devices and equipment.

The router is connected to the ONT, and at that point you have our full-fibre service in your property.

FTTP is known for high speeds and reliable internet connections because it used fibre optics, capable of transmitting data at incredibly fast speeds and over long distances without signal degradation or loss.

This technology also allows for symmetrical internet speeds, meaning you get fast upload and download speeds for smooth and speedy connectivity, making it suitable for many applications including streaming, online gaming, video conferencing, and much more.

We build our own full-fibre network, which involves laying fibre optic underground. Inevitably, this will result in some works in the streets of your community. 

We liaise closely with local authority representatives and teams, as well as getting the relevant permissions and authority from highway teams to ensure any disruption is minimal. 

We do! Once we’ve completed work in the area, we return to reinstate the streets, homes and gardens to how they were before.

As part of our network build, one of the crucial stages is a full area ‘walk out’ with the relevant local authority teams to make sure all work has been completed and streets have been reinstated to the correct standards.

No – we don’t touch your existing set up! We build and install our own faster broadband network without using any of your existing setup. This means you can leave that connection in the background or run two services side-by-side, if you wish.

While we can deliver full-fibre broadband speeds up to 2Gbps to your property, the speed you experience in your home using WiFi may be affected by a number of factors. The number of connected devices, the router placement and home size, layout and construction of your home may all cause speed variations by room.

For the best coverage, wherever possible place the router as centrally as you can, away from large electrical appliances and avoid placing it in enclosed spaces such as cupboards.
